Usage Q&As

What is a VPS?

A virtual private server (VPS) looks and acts like a dedicated server but is actually part of a larger host machine. It is entirely separate from your desktop/laptop/tablet and runs its own operating system. It’s “virtual” because several virtual servers share one physical computer; however, it can be viewed as simply a standalone PC. A Simply Cloud VPS allows you to upload your betting bot software and keep it running 24/7 in our datacentre even if your home PC is turned off. Once you have set up the betting bot on your VPS, you can just let it run without any worries about connectivity.

Who should use a VPS?

Frequent travellers or people who live in countries with unreliable Internet connections are ideal candidates for VPS; however, just about anyone can benefit from its speed and reliability, particularly since software other than the bot can run on a VPS. The ability to log into your server from a smart phone gives you the added flexibility to check your bets anytime from anywhere.

What specifications are required to run a betting bot?

You will need a Windows configuration with enough memory to run at 600 RAM or more for most betting bots. A Linxus VPS will not be able to run a bot. Keep in mind that a VPS must be physically located in a country where it is not unlawful to bet online. At Simply Cloud, our servers are located in the UK where online gambling is legal.

Connecting to your VPS

Once you have received your login from Simply Cloud, which includes your server IP, username and password, you can easily connect to your VPS using Remote Desktop, which is standard in Windows Operating Systems. You can access Remote Desktop in the following way:

By default, you would access the Remote Desktop client on a Vista/7 machine at:
Start >> All Programs >> Accessories

And on a Windows XP machine at:
Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Communications

Alternatively, you can start the program using:
Start >> Run >> mstsc.exe
Search >> mstsc.exe

  1. Once you have started Remote Desktop, enter the IP address of your server and then click the ‘Connect’ button. (screen 1)

  2. If you are using Windows Vista, you will need to confirm that you trust this connection before entering the username and password. The username will always be ‘administrator’ (no quotes) while the unique password will be shown in your Simply Cloud Control Panel. Click the ‘OK’ button to continue. (screen 2)

  3. You are now connected to your VPS and will see the desktop of the server where you can configure it. An example of a Windows 2008 desktop is shown below. (screen 3)

Installing a bot on your VPS

Simply follow the steps to connect to your VPS, run Internet Explorer and download the bot. Then install it on the VPS and configure it by following the installation prompts.

Note: You may need to install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 to run the bot. If it comes installed on your VPS, it will need to be enabled in ‘Server Features'.
